EWRI/ASCE NEWS
The Environmental & Water Resources Section & Branch Award The Environmental and Water Resources Institute (EWRI) is looking to recognize and celebrate the activities of Section and Branches and the Institute’s Environmental and/or Water Resources Technical Groups. The merit award may be given to a Technical Group based on their activities, local technical community involvement, community activities and joint activities with non-civil engineering groups. There are two awards based on a combination of geographic size and population density. The awards information and criteria is available from Karen C. Kabbes . A short (two to three page) written summary of your activities and information should be submitted to kckabbes@kabbesengineering.com prior to February 1, 2005. The recognition ceremony will be held at the EWRI Anchorage Congress in May 2005. COMMITTEE NEWS ASCE/EWRI Urban Drainage Standards Committee Meeting The EWRI/ASCE Urban Drainage Standards Committee will be meeting on February 4, 2005, in Baltimore, Maryland, to resolve public comments regarding the Urban Drainage Subsurface Standard Guidelines and to ready the documents for publication. >> For more information, please contact William Archdeacon, P.E. Mark Your Calendars! Council Weekend 2005 EWRI’s 3rd Annual Council Weekend has been scheduled for February 26-27, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. Sustainable Engineering Practice: An IntroductionSustainable Engineering Practice: An Introduction provides a broad, fundamental understanding of sustainability principles and their application to engineering work. It is intended to fill a need for a primer on sustainability that can be introduced early in an engineer’s career: it brings together all the basic dimensions of the history, concepts, and applications of sustainable engineering; and through a variety of examples and references, inspires and encourages engineers to pursue and integrate sustainable engineering into their work on a life-long basis. The Report contains: (1) Background summary of the role and accomplishments of engineers in sustainable development. The complete report, "Engineers and Sustainable Development," is contained on the accompanying CD ROM; (2) Summary of the major commitments made and implementation activities agreed upon at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002, and the initial steps taken by the U.S. engineering community and its global partners; (3) Wide spectrum of examples, which describe how sustainability principles can and are being integrated and applied in engineering education, research, and practice; (4) Sustainability definitions, policy statements, and principles providing a broad sense of the visionary and ethical goals and strategies of sustainable engineering practice; and (4) References, resources, and tools containing a wealth of additional information that can be used to pursue the basic materials in the Report in greater depth and detail. Both young and veteran engineering professionals, and engineering students will benefit from this primer on sustainable development and its concepts and applications. >> Order Today! Richards, P.E. In this seminar you will learn the concepts of channel stability analysis, causes and characteristics of bank scour, how to recognize various types of toe failures, perform assessment of vertical and lateral stability and understand their influence on toe scour. You will learn to evaluate various design methods, determine which toe protection method is applicable and be able to make recommendations for inspection and maintenance. >> View Brochure >> Register Online Today! ASCE Distance Learning: Introduction to HEC-HMS This seminar-on-CD is an overview and demonstration of the Hydraulic Engineering Center’s Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) software. It is intended primarily for those already familiar with hydrologic watershed models such as HEC-1, TR-20, or SWMM. The focus is on new HEC-HMS capabilities, such as the powerful graphical interface and the ability to use new data sets such as NEXRAD weather radar data and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). This course contains the same class materials provided at the live seminar, including HEC-HMS and HEC-GeoHMS User’s Manuals and software installation. >> For More Information >> Order Online Now Available from ASCE: A New Seminar-On-CD on GIS in Water Resources GIS has been used for many years to develop solutions to water resource problems. This new ASCE seminar-on-CD is geared toward those wanting to learn about the basics of GIS and how it can be used as a vital tool in the field of water resources. Assessing water resources, determining water availability, preventing flooding, understanding the natural environment, and managing water resources on a local or regional scale are just some of the tools discussed. Class materials included on the CD are slide handouts that can be printed and used for taking notes during a session and a quiz that can be completed to earn Continuing Education Units. >> For More Information >> Order Online Today!
