Trans-Pacific Environmental Seminar in Hawaii
In March 2004, environmental and water resources professionals from North America and Hawaii attended the 11th biennial international seminar organized by the International Cooperation Council (formerly the International Water Resources Activity Committee) of ASCE and EWRI. These seminars are aimed at bringing together a relatively small group of highly qualified, international professionals and local engineers in the field of environmental and water resources for presentations and discussions on selected water resources and environmental management issues.
The seminar was hosted by the University of Hawaii, Manoa (Honolulu) on March 7-9, 2004. It included twelve presentations covering a wide range of technical topics and tours, along with sightseeing and social events. Technical tours included a visit to a Membrane Bio Reactor Pilot Project, a Xeriscape Garden, and a trip down the Halawa Shaft - a major water source for the Honolulu Water System. The seminar was organized by a committee headed by Jack Day of Green Bay, and included Lambert Yamashita, James Moncur, and Phil Moravcik of Honolulu and Walter Grayman of Cincinnati. Partial funding was provided by Austin, Tsutsumi & Assoc., Inc. of Honolulu.
Plans are underway for the next environmental seminar to be held in early 2006 in Merida, Mexico. Organizers for this seminar are Dr. Julia Pacheco and Armando Cabrera of the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan (pavila@tunku.uady.mx), and Ernie Giovannitti (egiovannitti@earthlink.net).
