Congratulations to the Winners of the EWRI Visiting International Fellowship!
The EWRI’s International Cooperation Council (ICC) will host Dr. Dilorom Fayzieva, Mr. Wijanto Hadipuro, and Dr. Jose Ochoa-Iturbe as its distinguished Visiting International Fellows at the 2004 World Water and Environmental Resources Congress in Salt Lake City, Utah. Each Fellow will give a presentation on a water or environmental resources topic pertinent to his/her country in technical sessions at the conference. The ICC is also sponsoring a panel discussion between the Fellows and other invited panelists on "Water Quality."
Dr. Fayzieva is the Head of the Environmental Medicine and Hygiene Laboratory at the Institute of Water Problems of the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Her specialty areas include epidemiology and health, risk assessment of water-borne diseases, and water pollution impacts. Dr. Fayzieva will give a presentation entitled "Hydroecological Situation of the Basin of the River Zaravshan in Uzbekistan." Dr. Fayzieva will visit with her host, Dr. Amy Childress (ASCE member) and other faculty at the University of Nevada-Reno to give presentations and work on the development of collaborative research proposals.
Mr. Wijanto Hadipuro is a lecturer and researcher in the Post Graduate Program on Environment and Urban Studies at Soegijapranata Catholic University in Semarang, Indonesia. His work involves policy analysis and water management, including advocating for the Indonesia Draft Water Law. Mr. Hadipuro will give a presentation on "Public Participation on Safe Water Management in Semarang, Indonesia." His host, Dr. Stuart Moring (ASCE member), has arranged for Mr. Hadipuro to visit several agencies during his visit including the Georgia Institute of Technology, the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Protection, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Dr. Jose Ochoa-Iturbe serves as the Director of the School of Civil Engineering at Universidad Catolica Andres Bello (UCAB) in Caracas, Venezuela, as well as the Director of the Environmental Graduate Program at UCAB. He has worked on a variety of water-related issues, including master plans for cities, design of water mains, sweater, and urban storm drainage systems, and hydrology and hydraulic studies for bridges and floodplain delineation. Dr. Ochoa-Iturbe will be giving a presentation entitled "Recovery of the Capacity of a Water Supply System as a Means to River Restoration" at the conference. During his visit, he will continue collaboration with his host, Dr. John Stone (ASCE member) for developing on-campus and distance learning opportunities for South American students.
The EWRI International Fellowship Reception will take place on Monday, June 27th from 5-6 pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Grand America Hotel. Be sure to stop by and welcome the International Fellows to share in some refreshments with members of the ICC and colleagues from around the world.
