Introducing New Standards Administrator

Members of ASCE Standards Committees:

As the new ASCE Standards Administrator, please allow me to introduce myself. I joined the ASCE Codes and Standards staff on July 17th and am looking forward to working with each of you to facilitate the production of ASCE's Codes & Standards. I have extensive experience in Account Management and Customer Service with e*Trade Bank in Arlington, VA and with United Communications Group in Rockville, MD.

While I am new to the position of Standards Administrator, I have been with ASCE for over a year and a half, previously working in the Geographic Services Department assisting several Boards, Committees and Regional Governors. In that position I attended and helped facilitate many committee meetings and particularly the Zone Conferences in Houston and Boston in 2006. I may have met several of you at these events and look forward to interacting with you again in my new position. I decided to come to ASCE as I have many friends who are members of the National Capital Section Younger Member Forum of ASCE.

Being relatively new to the position, I would like to take the opportunity to review several administrative items:

1) Revisions to ASCE's Rules for Standards Committee were completed this past July and will be effective November 1, 2006. These can be found by accessing ASCE's Web site. The following link will direct you to the revised Rules: http://www.asce.org/instfound/codesandstandards.cfm. For your reference, the current rules are included in the 2006 ASCE Official Register and the revised Rules will be included in the 2007 ASCE Official Register.

2) It is important to note that the vast majority of communication with committees will be done via e-mail. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain a current e-mail address on file with ASCE. ASCE members may update their contact information online at http://www.asce.org/membership/. All other committee members should call the ASCE Customer Service Support Line at (800) 548-2723.

3) Meeting Notifications: The Rules require a Standards Committee meeting to be published in ASCE News a minimum of 30 days in advance of the meeting. According to the Rules, 60 days is preferable, but 30 days is the minimum. Please see the table below for submission of meeting requests.

4) Assistance with Web-based balloting system - if you experience any difficulties with the Web-based balloting system, please contact me as soon as possible.

5) Roster changes will be done on a regular basis. Please send any roster change requests to: pmariscal@asce.org, or Maggie Mairena, Standards Assistant at mmairena@asce.org. Changes will be made within the week they are received. Please remember that additions and/or deletions to a Standards Committee must be approved by the Committee Chair and that all membership applications must be accompanied by a brief interest statement and resume.

Thank you again for your support of the ASCE Standards process. Please let me know if I can be of assistance.

Regards,
