Outstanding Technical Group/Institute Chapter Awards
Purpose
The purpose of this Section & Branch Council Outstanding Technical Group Award is to honor an outstanding ASCE Section or Branch Environmental and/or Water Resource Technical Group or EWRI Chapter based on their activities, relative to their size and geographic location. This award will reward groups that:
- Are active relative to the geographic size of their section or branch and relative to engineering population of their section or branch,
- Have a high percentage of EWRI engineering employees participating,
- Assist other ASCE non-practice groups and/or conduct career guidance activities,
- Perform some type of community service or philanthropic activity,
- Co-sponsor activities with other engineering or non-engineering groups, and
- Have a higher percentage of non-engineering EWRI participants involved
Frequency
A maximum of two awards can be given annually, based on geographic size and population density. No award will be given when a worthy Section or Branch Technical Group or EWRI Chapter is not identified.
Eligibility
Only ASCE Section or Branch Technical Groups or EWRI Chapters are eligible to receive this award. An ASCE Section or Branch Technical Group or EWRI Chapter may receive the award only once in a five (5) year period; previous winners are ineligible for five (5) years.
Nature of the Award
The award will consist of a framed award given to a section or branch listing the names of the current officers and the immediate past president or past chair.
Nominating Procedure and Deadline
Nominations will be accepted from any member of ASCE or EWRI. The due date for nominations is February 1
st.
A complete nomination package shall include (a) section/branch or chapter name, (b) submitter's name and contact information, current officers and immediate past president or chair and (c) answers to the following questions:
- How many activities and what type of activities did the group sponsor or co-sponsor over the last year?
- Were any of the activities co-sponsored with a non-engineering environmental or water resource focused or other type of organization?
- How many engineers participated in the EWRI activities in the last year? How many non-engineers?
- Were any of the activities of a community assistance or philanthropic nature (ie., engineers helping others, not necessarily through engineering)?
- Were any activities geared specifically towards younger members, student members, minority members or career guidance for students?
- Approximately how many engineering firms or public agencies with environmental and water resources engineering are located in your area? Approximately how many non-engineering water and environmental firms or public agencies exist in your area?
- What percent of those firms and agencies send attendees to your activities?
- How big is your geographical area?
- If chosen as the award-winning group, is a representative of your group able to attend the EWRI Congress and make a short presentation on your group and activities?
Length & Format: single spaced, 1-3 pages total, one-side, standard 8 ½ x 11 inch paper, single spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins (MS Word or WordPerfect format saved in a Word format).
Return by email. If a nomination package is submitted, but does not receive an award, updated information can be submitted the following year.
Any deviation from format or length will be subject to penalty

Selection Committee
The selection committee shall consist of the members of the EWRI Sections & Branch Activities Council, who will review the nominations and then make a recommendation to the EWRI Awards Committee.
Selection Procedure
- The Chairperson will distribute copies of the supporting materials to the Sections & Branches Council members by February 8th.
- The Committee members will be asked to rank the nominees on a scale of 1 to n (the number of nominees) and submit their rankings to the Chairperson prior to the February Section & Branch Council Meeting.
- The Chairperson will compile the rankings (normalized to account for any abstentions due to conflict of interest) and evaluate them on the basis of both normalized score and rank order.
- The Chairperson will communicate the results of the ranking to the Council members at the February Sections & Branches Council Meeting. The results will be forwarded by email to the EWRI Awards Committee and Governing Board for Concurrence.
- The award winners will be notified by email by March 15th.
Presentation of the Award
The award will be presented at the EWRI Congress.
